Artists’s Notes

“While the 1952 Sarasota County Fair was in progress, early one morning I went ‘site searching’ on the almost deserted carnival lot. The fair was at the outskirts of town, just past the railroad tracks (where the Ringling Shopping Plaza now stands!). In those days, circus tents housed the exhibits and made the perfect backdrop for the Bullet and the Octopus.”

“I approached a rather burly-looking man, evidently doing his daily safety check on the Ferris wheel. While chatting with him, I noticed that he was highly tattooed, including a third eye in the middle of his forehead. And yes, he would put me ‘up top’ to sketch a bird’s eye view of the midway. Awhile later I’d finished my sketching, but the man was nowhere in sight – maybe not a good idea after all! However, he eventually came back, treated me to a few spins on the big wheel, and was very interested in critiquing my work.”
